A female police officer from Phalombe Police Station is battling for her life at Holy Family Mission Hospital after allegedly attempting suicide by poisoning.
According to a police flash report issued by Phalombe Police Station and addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the South East Region, the incident occurred on Friday, 10 October 2025, at Sakhome Village, Traditional Authority Nkhumba in Phalombe District.

The report identifies the officer as Sergeant Eliza Masina, who allegedly ingested an unknown poisonous substance in what is suspected to be a suicide attempt.
“A report was received that Sgt Eliza Masina of Phalombe Police Station tried to commit suicide by poisoning after taking in an unknown poisonous substance,” reads part of the police report.
Police investigations reveal that Sgt Masina had been emotionally distressed following the end of a long-term relationship with her fiancé, identified only as Allan, who reportedly married another woman two years ago.
“Briefly, the officer had a fiancé named Allan and they were about to get married. For no reason, the man dumped her and married another woman, and she has been heartbroken,” the report adds.
The report further states that on the day of the incident, Sgt Masina sent a message to her fellow female officers informing them that she had taken poison and was about to die.
Her colleagues rushed to her home, but found the door locked from inside. One officer managed to retrieve the house key through an open window, and upon entering, they discovered her lying unconscious on the floor.
She was immediately rushed to Holy Family Hospital, where she was admitted and is reported to be in fair condition.
Police have since opened an inquiry under reference number PB/CID/13/1.
Authorities have not yet released further details as investigations continue.
