Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri has emphasized the importance of effective communication in maximizing limited government resources and achieving high-impact results, especially during budget cuts.
Speaking today at the Africa-US forum on global health, public diplomacy, and international collaboration in the United States, Phiri noted that clear communication can prevent misinformation and ensure targeted efforts, reducing foreign aid dependency.
“We seriously need to focus on effective communication and resource allocation in global health initiatives, especially reproductive health issues that strain our economy,” Phiri said.

He cited the recent layoff of health experts due to USA funding cuts, highlighting the devastating impact of funding gaps on Malawi’s healthcare systems.
Phiri urged partners and stakeholders to incorporate local traditions and cultural practices into modern healthcare approaches to educate communities on emerging health issues, such as polio.
The forum, organized by the University of Southern California (USC), featured discussions on climate change impacts in Africa, HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa, and media sustainability in global health.
Fellows from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, and South Sudan attended, sharing progress and experiences.
