From Beneficiary to Benefactor: Joyce Banda Hails Rita Nyaude for Empowering Girls Through Education

Former President Dr. Joyce Banda has thrown her full support behind the newly launched Rita Nyaude Initiative, a charitable organisation aimed at helping underprivileged girls access education.

The initiative, founded by Rita Nyaude — one of the beneficiaries of the Joyce Banda Foundation — seeks to pay school fees for 66 needy girls from five secondary schools in Machinjiri, Blantyre.

Speaking during the launch on Saturday, Nyaude said she was inspired by Dr. Banda’s generosity, which saw her through primary, secondary and university education.

“Dr. Joyce Banda supported me until I completed my journalism degree. I want to do the same for other girls who are struggling to stay in school,” said Nyaude.

She also appealed to well-wishers, organisations and individuals to join hands in supporting the initiative so that more girls can benefit from the programme.

“The need is huge. My dream is to see every girl in my community have a chance to complete school and build a better future. I invite all well-wishers to support this cause in any way they can,” she added.

The Joyce Banda Foundation has donated over K4 million to support the initiative’s first phase this school term.

Foundation official Clement Malemia said the organisation is proud to see one of its former beneficiaries giving back to her community.

In a heartfelt statement, Dr. Banda recounted how she met Rita in 2012 when her mother brought her to an event in Makheta, pleading for help with her daughter’s education.

Banda enrolled the young girl at Joyce Banda Foundation School, supported her through university, and even built a home for her mother.

“I am grateful to God for how my child has blossomed. I am happy to see Mai Nyaude with her daughter. I pray that Rita will continue to inspire and motivate other girls in the area. I have no doubt that this organisation will achieve so much with God’s help. Go! Go! Baby Go!” wrote Dr. Banda.

The launch, held in Blantyre, was attended by community leaders, parents, teachers, and Joyce Banda Foundation representatives, including Madam Chisomo and Mr. Clement Malemia, who commended Rita for her vision and compassion.

The Rita Nyaude Initiative marks a powerful story of transformation — from a young girl once lifted by generosity to a woman now lifting others toward a brighter future.
