Rose Nzenda’s Mother’s Day Story | A Lesson in Compassion, Leadership and Accountability

Did you know that, When one bird cries out in a forest, wise people do not only listen to that bird; they look around to discover what may have silenced the others. Likewise, when one patient cries for help, we must ask how many others are suffering in silence.

On Mother’s Day, at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Malawi’s Vice President, Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah, demonstrated the human side of leadership by listening to patients and guardians. As she prepared to leave, one woman courageously raised her voice. Her name was Rose Nzenda. After reportedly spending a month in hospital awaiting an operation estimated to cost K6 million, she explained that she could not afford even a single tambala. Following her appeal, a doctor assured her that the operation would be performed free of charge.

We commend Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah, Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, for taking the time to listen to a vulnerable patient and helping turn a moment of despair into renewed hope. Her encounter with Rose reminds us that leadership is most meaningful when it reaches those who need it most.

But one important question remains: If only one patient stood up and spoke, how many others are lying in hospital beds, silently struggling with illness, poverty, and the fear that nobody will hear them?

This is also a wake-up call to hospital management. Patients should not have to wait for the Vice President or another senior leader to visit before their circumstances receive serious attention. Doctors, nurses, and administrators must identify vulnerable patients early, communicate their needs, and explore available support. Compassion should be part of everyday healthcare—not an exceptional response when a prominent visitor arrives.

As Mark 10:46–52 reminds us through the story of Bartimaeus, Jesus stopped when He heard a desperate cry for mercy. Sometimes, the greatest miracle begins when someone chooses to listen.

This Mother’s Day, Rose Nzenda’s story gives us a reason to celebrate compassion while reflecting on the thousands whose stories remain untold. May Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah’s example inspire leaders and healthcare professionals to ensure that every patient matters, every mother’s pain is acknowledged, and no one is forgotten because they are poor or powerless.

A flower may wither, a gift may fade, but the hope restored by an act of compassion can live in someone’s heart forever.
