Catholic Bishops Lets pray for Mutharika as he takes leadership

The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) has asked Malawians to pray for the President-elect of the Republic of Malawi Peter Mutharika to fulfil people’s wishes.

Mutharika of Democratic Progress Party (DPP) emerged winner in the September 16, 2025 polls and unseats Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) who has served his one term.

Right Rev. Martin Anwel Mtumbuka, president of MCCB MCCB emphasised the need to pray for the president elect and all leaders in public life that they may rise to meet the responsibilities entrusted to them as servants of the nation.

”Let us ask the intercessions of our Blessed Mother, Mary, the Patroness of our nation, that she guides us to uphold the common good of all and promote the dignity of the human person, especially the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn, the stranger, the elderly and the inform.” said Mtumbuka

While conveying heartfelt congratulations to Mutharika on his resounding victory in the Presidential Elections, MCCB has also commended the outgoing president Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, for putting the interests of Malawi first by graciously conceding defeat and congratulating the President-elect.

‘’This noble gesture has once again reaffirmed Malawi’s enduring democratic character.’’ Reads part of the statement signed by Mtumbuka

Mtumbuka said the Catholic Church is not aligned with any political party, and neither is the MCCB.

‘’Regardless of whom occupies Kamuzu Palace or commands the majority in Parliament, the Church’s teachings remain unchanged. As Catholic Bishops, we look forward to working with the elected leadership to advance the common good. As Christians and as Malawians, we have the duty to treat one another with charity, respect, and civility, even when we may differ on matters of public policy.’’ Said the Bishops
