President Arthur Peter Mutharika has sent Deputy Minister of Homeland Security (Operations) Norman Chisale to visit Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Mlowoka Kayira, who is recovering from gunshot wounds sustained during an operation to rescue kidnapped British national Nusrat Osman in Blantyre.
According to Blantyre City Mayor Jomo Osman, Chisale was delegated by Mutharika to visit Kayira and convey the President’s appreciation for his service to the country.
Osman said Chisale also delivered financial support from Mutharika to assist with Kayira’s upkeep during his recovery, alongside flowers and a get-well card.
“The visit was to personally convey the President’s appreciation for a job well done and to commend Dr. Kayira for his remarkable and dedicated service to Malawi,” Osman said.
Kayira was shot during a police operation at Mingale in Mpemba, Blantyre, last Thursday, as officers moved to rescue Osman, who had been abducted from the Mount Pleasant area.
The operation involved an exchange of gunfire between police and suspected kidnappers. Police said four suspects sustained gunshot wounds and later died, while Kayira was also injured and taken to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital.
Kayira has since been reported to have improved and moved out of the intensive care unit into a general ward.
Osman was rescued during the operation and was also taken to Mwaiwathu for medical assessment following her ordeal.
Osman said Mutharika and the government hold Kayira in high regard for his contribution to the country’s peace and security.
“We appreciate what he did and continues to do for Malawi,” Osman said.
The Malawi Police Service has said investigations into the kidnapping and the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation are continuing.
