Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Bright Msaka SC, has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening Malawi’s education system as a key driver of human capital development and economic transformation.
Msaka said this when he received World Bank Division Director for Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Firas Raad, and incoming World Bank Country Manager for Malawi, Abdu Muwonge, who paid a courtesy call to the Ministry on Wednesday.
The Minister said Malawi values its partnership with the World Bank, not only as a financing partner, but also as a source of technical expertise, evidence and international experience.
He highlighted foundational learning, teacher development, digital transformation and the link between education and employment as key areas requiring sustained investment.
Msaka stressed the importance of improving learning outcomes, particularly literacy and numeracy in the early grades, while strengthening teacher recruitment, deployment and professional development.
He said teachers remain the most important resource in the education system, adding that Malawi would welcome stronger World Bank collaboration in teacher preparation, instructional leadership and the use of evidence to improve learning.
World Bank Division Director for Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Firas Raad, reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to working closely with Government to advance Malawi’s education agenda and support the implementation and completion of ongoing infrastructure projects.
Raad emphasised the Bank’s readiness to continue working with the Ministry on key priorities, including the newly introduced Free Secondary Education, school feeding initiatives, foundational learning and the P-Class pilot programme.
He highlighted the importance of skills development and transition pathways for learners completing secondary education into vocational training, employment and tertiary education.
