SULOM Extends Apology to FDH Bank Over Kamuzu Stadium Chaos

Lilongwe, April 27, Mana: The Super League of Malawi has issued a formal apology following the abrupt failure to launch the 2026 FDH Bank Premiership at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

In a press statement released on Monday, SULOM expressed regret to FDH Bank Plc, participating teams, football stakeholders and the general public over the disruption that led to the cancellation of the season opener.

“We would like to categorically clarify that at no point did FDH Bank impose decisions on venue selection or interfere in league operations,” reads part of the statement.

The league governing body also apologised to the government through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the Football Association of Malawi, whose concerns led to the closure of the stadium ahead of the event.

SULOM stressed that the league sponsor had no role in decisions regarding the choice of venue or operational matters, saying all decisions were made independently and in the best interest of the game.

The body said it takes full responsibility for the outcome of the failed launch.
SULOM further disclosed that it is engaging FDH Bank to review the incident and develop measures to prevent a recurrence.

Despite the setback, the organisation commended the bank for its continued support, noting that it has already disbursed MK500 million as part of its MK1 billion annual sponsorship package, with some funds already allocated to clubs.

SULOM expressed optimism that ongoing dialogue with stakeholders will help resolve the situation and ensure smooth running of the league.

The body said it will provide further updates once engagements with the sponsor are concluded.
“Let football win,” the statement concluded.
