President Arthur Peter Mutharika has issued Executive Order No. 01 of 2025, directing the relocation of selected government institutions from Lilongwe to Blantyre and Zomba as part of efforts to improve administrative efficiency and promote equitable regional development.
According to the order, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will move from Lilongwe to Blantyre, while the Malawi Prison Service (MPS) will relocate to Zomba.
President Mutharika said the decision aims to realign government operations and utilize existing infrastructure across regions without compromising service delivery.
The Executive Order takes immediate effect, with the relocation process expected to commence immediately and be completed within three months. The President emphasized that institutions must ensure continuity of operations during the transition period to avoid disruption of services
