Ramadan relief drive targets nationwide coverage in Malawi

The Faizan Global Relief Foundation (FGRF) says it is working to expand its Ramadan food distribution campaign to cover communities across Malawi, after reaching more than 15,000 families in the first week of the holy month.

The charity says it has invested about 2 billion kwacha in the programme, which provides vulnerable households with maize flour, beans, rice, soya pieces and sugar to support meals at iftar and sehri.

In Salima district alone, 4,000 families received food packs during a recent distribution exercise. The organisation says it has also delivered assistance in areas including Nsanje, Thyolo, Zomba, Kanjedza, Chikunda and Chiswe, with further districts expected to be covered in the coming weeks.

Malawi is facing food shortages in several regions following erratic rains and prolonged dry spells. The government previously declared a State of National Disaster in response to poor harvests.

FGRF’s Director of Communications and Public Relations, Ibrahim Omar, said the initiative is intended to ensure that families are able to observe Ramadan without going hungry. He said the campaign is also designed to complement government relief efforts.

Malawi’s Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Joel Chigona, welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely support for communities struggling with food insecurity.

FGRF says its distributions will continue throughout Ramadan as it seeks to extend assistance to more vulnerable households nationwide.
