NBM earns praise for backrolling Scorchers’ historic World Cup qualification

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc is earning praise from soccer followers for its continued bankrolling of the Malawi Scorchers following the team’s historic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Scorchers secured their place at the global tournament after beating Ghana 2-1 in the WAFCON quarter-final in Morocco on Sunday.

The result also sent Malawi into the semi-finals, where they will face Algeria on Wednesday.

Following the historic victory, supporters on social media and various football forums have been highlighting the role played by NBM in supporting the national team.

Some fans have argued that the bank’s sponsorship has helped the Scorchers prepare and compete at a high level, with others saying sustained corporate support is important for the growth of women’s football.

NBM is the official sponsor of the Scorchers and has been involved in the team’s campaign both at home and in Morocco.

The bank has also provided platforms for supporters to follow the tournament together.

For the Ghana match, NBM hosted viewing events at Café 92 in Lilongwe and Linde Lounge & Grill in Mzuzu, attracting supporters who gathered to watch the quarter-final.

The final whistle was followed by celebrations at both venues as the Scorchers held on for the win.

NBM also took a delegation of customers and partners to Morocco for the match.

The group included senior managers from the bank, customers, government officials and winners of the ‘Waku WAFCON’ promotion.

NBM Head of Corporate Banking Bernard Masi, who is in Morocco with the delegation, said before the quarter-final that the bank wanted its customers and partners to experience the Scorchers’ campaign first-hand.

The bank’s support of the women’s game also extends to domestic football through the NBM Women’s Premier League.
