Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kaira has come under renewed scrutiny following fresh allegations circulating on social media and within police circles accusing him of favouring officers from the Northern Region in promotions and appointments to key positions within the Malawi Police Service.
The allegations claim that Kaira has influenced the promotion and deployment of officers from the region while sidelining others.
The claims have surfaced amid ongoing debate over senior leadership within the police service.
Among the names being circulated in connection with the alleged promotions are Thandi Mwalwenje and Andule Mwakikunga, who are reportedly being considered for promotion to Commissioner.
Dave Kumwenda, Gift Chiundira, Julius Munthali and Rhoda Luhanga have also been mentioned as potential Deputy Commissioners.
The allegations have reignited debate over regional representation within the police service, with some critics questioning whether senior appointments adequately reflect national diversity.
Others argue that promotions should continue to be based on merit and established institutional procedures.
Critics have also revived discussion of a previous fatal shooting incident in which Kaira was publicly mentioned.
The incident attracted public attention at the time.
There are also claims circulating on social media alleging that individuals have been engaged to publish favourable content about Kaira, including posts comparing his leadership with that of Isaac Norman DCP.
The debate has also extended to Kaira’s academic credentials, with some commentators alleging that his doctoral qualification has been used to reinforce his authority within the institution.
Some commentators have also questioned the appointment of both the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General, noting that both are from the Northern Region despite the availability of qualified officers from other parts of the country.
Others maintain that appointments to senior public offices should be based on competence, integrity and the law rather than regional considerations.
Kaira did not respond to requests for comment.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service has not issued an official statement responding to the allegations.
Governance experts say allegations of regional bias in public appointments should be investigated through established institutional processes to safeguard public confidence in the Malawi Police Service.
They say any findings should be handled in accordance with the law, due process and the principles of natural justice.
