The recent reinstatement of Henry Mathanga as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi is a landmark moment for our financial sector. After years of legal battles and being caught in the “clearing the rubble” crossfire, the courts have cleared him of all charges.
Mathanga is a career banker who rose through the ranks at RBM through merit, not political patronage. His return, alongside similar resolutions for professionals at MACRA and the Tobacco Commission, highlights a dangerous trend: the targeting of hard working experts based on home of origin, religion, or perceived political leanings.
Our advice to the administration: Governance must be driven by competence, not emotion or political vendettas. When we sideline our best professionals, the whole nation pays the price.
