Renowned IT specialist Lovemore “Cyber” Chikopa has launched a nationwide campaign aimed at eradicating cyberbullying, a move he believes will foster a safer digital environment and boost productivity across Malawi.
Speaking shortly after the launch, Chikopa raised concerns over how unsafe social media has become for thousands of Malawians, particularly entrepreneurs and individuals, contributing to the country’s socio-economic development. He attributed this toxic environment to envy and personal agendas.
“Social media was created to drive positive growth and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of nations. It is a powerful tool designed for business promotion, professional networking, and skill acquisition to help people earn a living,” Chikopa stated.
“Unfortunately, the narrative has shifted drastically. People are leveraging these platforms negatively, frequently launching coordinated online attacks against individuals who are thriving. We are determined to change this narrative.”
Chikopa revealed that his team has formulated a comprehensive strategy, set to be unveiled soon, which will focus on massive public sensitization regarding the devastating impacts of online harassment.
To anchor the initiative, they have established an educational and advocacy portal (https://stop-cyberbullying-malawi.vercel.app/) where the public can access critical information on safe digital practices, emotional support, and relevant legal frameworks like Malawi’s Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act.
The IT expert concluded with a strong appeal to Malawian youth, urging them to steer clear of toxic online behaviors and instead utilize digital platforms constructively for networking, business growth, and self-improvement. He emphasized that the youth carry a profound responsibility in driving Malawi’s development agenda forward.
