Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka has donated K1 million towards the launch of the Lucius Banda Foundation, in a move aimed at helping sustain the late musician’s charitable work.
Msaka, who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice-President for the Eastern Region, says Lucius Banda left behind a legacy of supporting vulnerable people, particularly through paying school fees for needy students.
In a statement, Msaka described Banda, popularly known as the “Soldier”, as a patriot whose contribution to Malawi went beyond music.
He said Banda’s efforts to support disadvantaged learners were in line with the country’s broader goal of expanding access to education and improving the lives of vulnerable communities.
Msaka also praised Banda for using his music to speak for the oppressed and challenge those in power, particularly during the Kamuzu Banda era.
He said Banda’s courage, patriotism and commitment to social justice had made him an important figure in Malawi’s history.
Msaka said his K1 million contribution was intended to help the Lucius Banda Foundation continue the work that the late musician started during his lifetime.
“Legends never die,” Msaka said, while paying tribute to Banda and wishing him eternal peace.
Lucius Banda, who was also a former parliamentarian, died in June 2024 at the age of 53.
