A sitting cabinet minister took off his political title and stood before more than 500 young people as a “Master Guide” on Saturday, urging Seventh-day Adventist Pathfinders to “put Jesus at the centre of everything” during the 1st Eastern Malawi Conference Pathfinder Camporee.
Honourable Chimwemwe Mazabuka Chipungu, Minister of Lands, told the gathering that despite serving among the 27 ministers in government, he has remained committed to his role as a Master Guide since 1992.
The rare display of humility drew loud applause from the youth, who are attending the camp under the theme “STAND STRONG” from 16 to 22 August 2026.
“Camporee is not just about singing and marching. It is a school that builds character and values,” Chipungu said, adding that “a Pathfinder must have Jesus at the centre of everything they do. Without Christ, everything is meaningless.”
He challenged the youth to “stand strong even when times are tough, even when you are alone” and to use their Pathfinder skills to serve God, their families and the nation.
The minister also celebrated what he described as the fruit of religious freedom under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
“Out of 27 ministers, we SDAs are at least seven. God is opening doors,” Chipungu said.
He added: “This is happening because His Excellency President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has ensured total freedom of worship in Malawi. When people are free to worship, the nation prospers.”
EMC leaders said Chipungu’s message greatly inspired the campers.
They noted that the President’s leadership has not only protected faith communities but has also delivered stability in other key sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture and youth empowerment, creating an environment where young people can grow both spiritually and nationally.
“A humble leader who serves both in church and government is exactly what our youth need to see,” one EMC official said, adding that “that is leadership by example.”
In his closing remarks, Chipungu called on the Pathfinders to dedicate themselves to Christ and to serving their communities.
The 1st Eastern Malawi Conference Pathfinder Camporee has brought together more than 500 Pathfinders and Master Guides from across the region for drills, Bible study and leadership training.
