Malawian human rights lawyer and governance commentator Alexious Kamangira has asked President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to mend his relationship with Vice-President Dr Jane Ansah.
Kamangira made the remarks after Mutharika praised the Malawi Scorchers for uniting Malawians through their performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
In a Facebook post after the Scorchers finished as runners-up, Kamangira directly appealed to the President to resolve his differences with Ansah.
“Arthur Peter Mutharika munati Scorchers yatipanga Unite Tonse aMalawi. I have one request; TAKONZANI UBALE wanu ndi @Dr Jane Ansah, your VP. This will TAME criminals in ur GVT,” Kamangira wrote.
His comments come amid reports that Mutharika and Ansah are not on good terms.
State House, however, has previously dismissed suggestions of a strained relationship between the two.
In a recent statement, Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi insisted that the President and Vice-President have a good working relationship.
Events in recent months, however, have fuelled speculation to the contrary.
Mutharika stopped delegating official duties to Ansah months ago, a development that has raised questions about the nature of their working relationship.
The lack of visible joint engagements between the President and his deputy has also continued to attract public attention.
Mutharika’s latest comments about the Scorchers came after the team finished second at WAFCON, giving Malawi one of its strongest moments of national unity in recent times.
Speaking after returning from South Africa, Mutharika said the Scorchers had achieved what politicians had failed to do by bringing Malawians together.
“The Scorchers have managed to achieve something that we politicians have never been able to do and that is; they have managed to unite this country,” he said.
The President also urged Malawians to learn from the teamwork displayed by the players, saying the same spirit was needed in the running of the country.
