Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu is tomorrow Wednesday, August 13 expected to present findings of a pilot land ownership audit conducted in Lilongwe, an exercise that has reportedly uncovered irregularities in the allocation of plots in Areas 3 and 10.
The ministry says the audit was launched in February this year as part of efforts to strengthen land administration systems, promote accountability in land ownership and improve transparency in the management of land resources.
According to an invitation issued by the ministry, Chipungu will preside over a press briefing in Lilongwe where officials are expected to share the outcome of the exercise.
“The Ministry embarked on the Land Ownership Audit exercise in February 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen land administration systems, promote accountability in land ownership and enhance transparency and efficiency in the management of land resources,” reads part of the invitation.
Information gathered through the audit indicates that a number of plots were allocated without following established procedures.
Among those reportedly named in the findings are politically exposed individuals, including ministers serving in both the current and former administrations, members of parliament and judges.
The audit focused on verifying ownership records, assessing development on plots and matching information contained in physical land files with records stored in the Land Information Management System (LIMS).
Government introduced the exercise to address challenges such as land grabbing, double allocation of plots, illegal land sales and fraudulent transactions that have contributed to land disputes across the country.
The pilot project is also expected to help establish a reliable property database for improved collection of ground rent and better management of public land.
