Minister of Education Bright Msaka has described the Anglican Church as one of government’s key partners in national development, citing its long-standing contribution to education, healthcare and community development across Malawi.
Msaka made the remarks on Sunday during the ordination of priests in the Anglican Upper Shire Diocese, where he represented President Arthur Peter Mutharika as the guest of honour.
He said the Church has continued to complement government’s efforts by establishing institutions that have transformed the lives of many Malawians.
Among the institutions he highlighted were Malosa Secondary School, Matindi Girls’ Secondary School and St. Luke’s Hospital, saying they reflect the Church’s commitment to improving access to education and healthcare.
“The Anglican Church has played a big role in supporting government’s development agenda. Its contribution to education and health is there for everyone to see,” said Msaka.
The minister also assured church leaders that government would consider their request for the construction of the Makanjira Road, describing the project as important for improving transport and boosting social and economic development in the area.
Addressing the newly ordained priests, Msaka urged them to remain faithful to their calling and serve their congregations with commitment, humility and integrity despite the challenges they may encounter in ministry.
He said government will continue strengthening its partnership with faith-based organisations because churches play a vital role in delivering social services and promoting community development.
Msaka also outlined some of government’s ongoing development programmes, saying each constituency has been allocated K100 million for youth loans to support businesses, while K5 billion has been earmarked for Constituency Development Fund projects.
As part of the ceremony, the minister presented gifts to the newly ordained priests and donated K1 million to the Anglican Church in support of its ministry.
