Fake alert: Education Ministry denies plans to close schools over workers above 60

The Ministry of Education has dismissed as false a message circulating on social media claiming that private schools in Malawi will be closed if they employ workers aged above 60 years.

The ministry says the message, which allegedly warns school owners and managers against retaining employees above the retirement age, is fake and does not represent any official communication from the government.

It has since urged the public to disregard the information and rely on official channels for updates.

The fake message claims that any private school found employing people above 60 years from the 2026/27 academic year would have its licence revoked.

It further alleges that the Ministry of Education has warned school directors and managers to comply with labour laws by removing employees who have reached retirement age, arguing that doing so would create job opportunities for unemployed young people.
