Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka has called on more students to take up technical and vocational subjects, saying practical skills are key to creating jobs and building a self-reliant nation.
Msaka made the remarks on Thursday when he visited Bwaila Secondary School in Lilongwe to witness the final practical examinations in Woodwork, Creative Arts and Metalwork, marking the end of the 2026 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.
After touring the examination rooms and inspecting the students’ work, the Minister said he was impressed by the quality of the projects, describing them as proof that technical education can equip young people with skills that are useful beyond the classroom.
He said learners with technical skills can earn a living during school holidays or start their own businesses if they do not immediately proceed to tertiary education.
Msaka therefore encouraged more students to consider technical and vocational subjects, saying they are central to Malawi’s drive towards industrialisation and job creation.
He added that strengthening technical education supports the Malawi 2063 vision, which places emphasis on skills development, productivity and self-reliance.
The Minister also commended the smooth administration of this year’s MSCE examinations, describing both the written and practical assessments as successful.
