The Jane Ansah Foundation has partnered with Sabwera Driving School to provide free driving lessons to people with short stature and albinism in Blantyre, with the first cohort of students already beginning their training.
The partnership was officially highlighted during a meeting held on July 21 between Dr. Jane Ansah, founder of the Foundation, and officials from Sabwera Driving School.
The meeting showcased the progress made since the launch of the initiative, which aims to promote inclusion and empower people with disabilities through driving skills.
Under the agreement, the Jane Ansah Foundation and Sabwera Driving School will offer fully funded driving lessons to people with short stature and albinism.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Ansah thanked Sabwera Driving School for partnering with the foundation and supporting the initiative.
She encouraged the school to continue working closely with the foundation so that more people with short stature and albinism who are interested can benefit from the programme.
She also urged the trainees to believe in themselves, overcome fear, and remain determined to achieve their goals.
Dr. Ansah commended one of the students, Rodwell Kamenya, popularly known as “Mr Handisamu,” for his confidence and determination.
Despite his height, Kamenya demonstrated that he is able to undertake driving lessons using specially adapted extra pedals.
The school’s Executive Director Augustine Sabwera thanked Dr. Ansah for the opportunity to partner with the foundation.
He said it was an honour for the school to provide free driving lessons and noted that it was the first time the institution had trained people with short stature.
Taking his turn, Kamenya expressed gratitude to Dr. Ansah and the Jane Ansah Foundation for believing in him and giving him the opportunity to attend driving lessons free of charge.
He also thanked the foundation for extending the same opportunity to other people with short stature and albinism.
