Education, Science and Technology Minister Bright Msaka has assured Parliament that government is committed to rehabilitating deteriorating infrastructure at Dzenza Secondary School in Lilongwe City.
Msaka made the assurance in Parliament on Tuesday while responding to a question from Lilongwe City Dzenza Constituency Member of Parliament Jonathan Mfune, who wanted to know government’s plans to rehabilitate the school, which accommodates boarding students from several constituencies.
The minister said Dzenza Secondary School, established in 1983 and currently enrolling 523 learners, requires major rehabilitation due to ageing infrastructure.
He cited a weakened assembly hall, fire-damaged boys’ hostels and a deteriorating sewage system among areas requiring urgent attention.
Msaka said government has already undertaken some maintenance works, including rehabilitation of the fire-damaged hostels, repainting school buildings through the Free Secondary Education Grant, fencing part of the school perimeter and supplying 70 mattresses during the previous financial year.
He commended the school management for effectively using available resources to improve learning conditions.
The minister added that his ministry is mobilising resources for a comprehensive rehabilitation programme and encouraged Lilongwe District Council to consider using Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources to support the project.
Msaka further pledged to work with MP Mfune to ensure Dzenza Secondary School receives the necessary attention.
