Fresh controversy has engulfed Blantyre Water Board (BWB) Board Chairperson Stanley Chirwa following allegations circulating on social media that he distributed US dollars to his wives, who allegedly went on to post videos and messages mocking Malawians struggling with the country’s economic hardships.
The allegations, have sparked widespread criticism from some members of the public and political commentators, who argue that such conduct, if proven, would demonstrate insensitivity at a time when many families are grappling with the rising cost of living.
Critics further allege that the funds displayed in the videos may have been obtained through abuse of public office.
The controversy has also reignited debate within political circles, with some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters we have spoken to expressing concern that the allegations could damage the party’s image ahead of future political engagements.
Chirwa has previously been the subject of legal proceedings, including an arrest in connection with allegations involving a stolen Ford Ranger.
The matter has remained part of public discussion, although its legal outcome is not yet known.
Some commentators are now urging former President and DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to review Chirwa’s continued appointment, arguing that the party should distance itself from controversies involving him.
