Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito says Malawi remains committed to strengthening international cooperation in tackling emerging security threats as he represents the country at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) in New York.
The two-day summit, taking place from July 7 to 8 at the United Nations Headquarters, has brought together ministers responsible for internal security, police chiefs, senior UN officials and security experts from across the globe to discuss the future of international policing and responses to evolving security challenges.
Discussions are focusing on strengthening United Nations policing, combating transnational organised crime, enhancing peacekeeping operations, promoting responsible use of technology in law enforcement and building resilient national police institutions.
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Mukhito said no country can effectively address today’s security challenges on its own.
“No nation can effectively confront today’s complex security threats in isolation. Terrorism, cybercrime, organised crime, human trafficking and other transnational threats require collective action, shared intelligence and stronger international partnerships. Malawi is proud to contribute to this global conversation while learning from the experiences of other nations as we continue strengthening our own security institutions for the benefit of our people,” he said.
Mukhito said Malawi is using the summit to share its experiences while learning from other countries on improving policing, border security, crime prevention and institutional capacity.
He said the meeting also provides an opportunity to strengthen partnerships with development partners, UN agencies and other member states in areas such as training, intelligence sharing, peacekeeping and security sector reforms.
The minister noted that the Government is implementing reforms aimed at modernising the Malawi Police Service through the adoption of new technologies, including digital policing, forensic science and intelligence-led policing.
He also highlighted Malawi’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions, saying Malawian police officers have continued to play an important role in promoting peace and stability in conflict-affected countries while bringing valuable experience back home.
Mukhito said the government of President Arthur Peter Mutharika remains committed to building professional, accountable and people-centred security institutions capable of responding effectively to both traditional and emerging security threats.
Malawi’s participation at UNCOPS 2026 is expected to strengthen the country’s engagement with international partners and contribute to efforts aimed at improving national security and public safety.
