
Mayamiko Nkoloma is a distinguished Malawian engineer, academic, technology innovator, and public servant who has been appointed as the Acting Director General of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority – MACRA.
Academically, Nkoloma has demonstrated consistent distinction from undergraduate to postgraduate level.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Malawi Polytechnic, now the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences- MUBAS obtained in 2005 but did secondary education at Dedza Secondary School until 1999.
He pursued further studies abroad, earning a Master of Science in Wireless Communication Systems(2016) from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, as well as a Master of Technology in Advanced Information Technology, specialising in Telecommunications and Networking(2011), from the International Institute of Information Technology (I²IT) in Pune, India.
He is currently pursuing a PhD at the Malawi University Of Science and Technology (MUST), where his studies focus on innovation and development, examining how technology can drive socio-economic transformation.
Professionally, Nkoloma has been serving as a telecommunications lecturer at MUBAS since 2006, mentoring and training future engineers while contributing to research in ICT and digital systems.
Beyond academia, he is widely recognised for his leadership in technology entrepreneurship through iMoSyS, a Malawian company founded by him that develops Internet of Things (IoT)-based solutions for real-world challenges.
Through iMoSyS, Nkoloma has led projects in smart water management, automated water access, and digital monitoring systems, with impact both locally and internationally.
The company has secured several international contracts, among them the iTap project in Kayunga District, Uganda, where iMoSyS is contracted to support the implementation of clean water access in peri-urban communities through technology.
Further, through iMoSyS, Mayamiko Nkoloma is also behind the development of Alonda, a Malawian digital platform and mobile application designed to improve access to essential and emergency services.
Alonda uses location-based technology to connect users to first responders and critical services such as ambulances, fire services, towing, waste management, and other everyday service providers, all through a single digital platform. In addition, the application serves as a digital marketplace, allowing small and medium enterprises to list their services and reach a wider customer base.
His appointment as MACRA Acting Director General comes at a critical time as Malawi strengthens its digital economy, expands connectivity, and modernises regulation in the communications sector.
