Vice President Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah has donated assorted relief items to 1,000 vulnerable households in Phalombe through the Dr Jane Ansah Foundation (JAFO).
Ansah made the donation on Tuesday during her visit to communities in Traditional Authority Kaduya, where she said the foundation would continue supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people, particularly people with disabilities and other marginalised groups.
She said the support is aimed at helping needy communities meet their basic needs while also promoting initiatives that can enable them to become economically self-reliant.
Ansah urged people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to form cooperatives in their respective areas to make it easier for them to access support, skills and economic empowerment opportunities.
She encouraged the communities to venture into income-generating activities such as animal husbandry and rabbit farming, as well as take advantage of programmes such as Malawi Agricultural Development Fund (MADEF) loans.
Ansah said through the foundation, in partnership with government, she would continue supporting needy people and work towards ensuring that no person dies of hunger in the country.
She pledged to return to Phalombe if the communities organise themselves into cooperatives, make progress and invite her to witness their achievements.
Vice Chairperson for Phalombe District Council Alex Mambo commended Ansah for the donation, describing it as timely.
