Mutharika Directs Land Allocation to Nantipwiri Farmers in Thyolo

President Peter Mutharika has ordered that part of the land at Nantipwiri Palm View Estate in Thyolo should be shared among local people for farming.

Speaking today during a stakeholders’ meeting with representatives of the farmers at the council, Minister of Lands Chimwemwe Chipungu said President Mutharika noted that, although the people had lost court battles, he had considered their various petitions to have a share of the more than 1,300 plots up for sale.

He has, however, warned that there is a strict restriction against selling the land. Last week, the district council announced that it would sell the land for commercial and residential development.

The minister said there will be a process to identify the rightful beneficiaries of the plots. Currently, 709 plots are under the Thyolo District Council, while the remainder are under the Ministry of Lands.

Group Village Headman William and Chairperson of the concerned farmers, Hussein Dickson Chiwalo, said they are happy with the development, saying it has put to rest the worries of 836 farmers using the land, and they believe this marks the end of the case.
