Education Minister Msaka Calls for More Investment in Education…Hails Standard Bank

Education Minister Bright Msaka has called for increased investment in Malawi’s education sector, saying the country still needs more schools, teachers and teaching and learning materials.

Msaka made the remarks in Lilongwe when he presided over the handover ceremony for Standard Bank Plc’s Project Youth initiative.

The bank has committed more than K500 million towards education and youth development, with the investment covering school infrastructure, tertiary education, vocational training and youth empowerment.

The package includes K261 million for a new school block at Chivumbe Community Day Secondary School, K100 million for STEM students at MUBAS and MUST, and K40 million for vocational training through DAPP Malawi.

Standard Bank will also provide K33 million to Hope for the Blind, K64 million to Press Trust for secondary school scholarships and K20 million to CARE Malawi for girls’ mentorship programmes.

Msaka commended Standard Bank for partnering with government, saying such private-sector support is important in addressing some of the challenges facing the education sector.

He said more investment is needed to ensure that learners have access to adequate infrastructure, qualified teachers and the materials necessary for effective learning.

MUBAS Vice Chancellor Nancy Chitera said the support will strengthen the university’s Endowment Fund and help needy students access higher education.

The Project Youth initiative is expected to benefit learners and young people through education, skills development and other opportunities aimed at improving their prospects.
