One of the most memorable aspects of Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah’s campaign was her consistent practice of first paying courtesy visits to traditional leaders before addressing political rallies.
This simple gesture reflected humility, respect and an understanding of the vital role chiefs play in Malawi’s communities.
By engaging traditional leaders first, she demonstrated that leadership begins with listening and respecting established institutions.
While traditional leaders remain politically neutral, such visits foster dialogue, mutual respect and stronger community engagement.
In my view, these qualities may help explain why Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika placed his confidence in Honourable Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah.
Mutharika’s choice is my choice too, because I value leadership rooted in respect, humility and service.
Moral Lesson: True leadership is earned through character, respect and meaningful engagement with the people and the institutions they value.
