…donates K2 million to Karonga Prison for brick moulding machines; to engage communities on dangers of mob justice
Minister of Homeland Security Hon. Peter Mukhito, MP, has commenced a four-day inspection tour of the Northern Region aimed at assessing the performance of departments and the progress of development projects under his Ministry.
Accompanied by Deputy Minister of Homeland Security Hon. Norman Chisale, MP, Minister Mukhito began the tour in Karonga on Monday morning, visiting key security institutions and inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects.
His first engagement was at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services at approximately 8:30 a.m., where he interacted with officers and assessed operations and service delivery.
The Minister later proceeded to Karonga Prison, where he inspected a newly constructed cell block and other development initiatives being undertaken at the correctional facility.
During the visit, Minister Mukhito donated K2 million to assist Karonga Prison in purchasing additional manual brick moulding machines.
Karonga Prison is currently producing bricks using a single manual brick moulding machine. The bricks are used to support development activities at the institution, while some are sold to surrounding communities as part of the prison’s income-generating initiatives.
The Minister’s contribution is therefore expected to expand the prison’s brick-production capacity, increase its ability to support infrastructure development and strengthen its potential to generate additional revenue through the sale of bricks to the public.
Minister Mukhito commended the prison authorities for embracing productive initiatives that promote self-reliance and contribute towards improving conditions at the institution.
In the afternoon, the Minister is scheduled to engage members of the Karonga community as part of Government’s community policing drive, with particular focus on the dangers and consequences of mob justice.
Minister Mukhito is expected to urge communities to reject violence, respect the rule of law and report suspected offenders to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
The engagement forms part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to strengthen cooperation between communities and law-enforcement agencies and to promote peaceful and lawful approaches to addressing crime and security concerns.
The Minister reaffirmed Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure, working conditions and operational capacity across institutions under the Ministry of Homeland Security, while strengthening community participation in maintaining law and order.
Also accompanying the Minister on the tour are Deputy Minister responsible for Gender Hon. Martha Mzomera Ngwira and Democratic Progressive Party Northern Region Governor Christopher Mzomera Ngwira.
Minister Mukhito is expected to continue inspecting security institutions and development projects in Karonga before proceeding to other districts as part of his Northern Region programme.
The four-day tour will enable the Minister to obtain first-hand information on operational challenges, assess progress on key projects, engage security personnel and interact directly with communities on measures required to strengthen security and improve service delivery across the region.
